Captain Lord Wizard

I met Larry while working as an intern at the Iowa City Public Library. It was the summer of 2023, and during my very first shift, in walks Larry.  He reached out his hand and introduced himself as “Larry Captain Lord Wizard Sievers.” With enthusiasm, he handed me his business card and said, "I like your long hair, it's very metal. We should get together sometime and listen to my metal CDs. My collection is super heavy." Before I could respond, he had already written down his phone number and home address on the back of another card.

These photographs document my ongoing collaboration and relationship with Larry Sievers, a musician and poet based in Iowa City, Iowa. Since meeting, Larry has invited me into his fantastic world of progressive-fantasy-metal-synthesizer music, composed with his signature three keyboards. Larry's sonic world that extends far beyond the beige walls of his apartment is comprised of a discography of hundreds of full-length albums recorded to tape. For almost two years we met at the library every Sunday to digitize one of his albums from the original audio cassette to upload onto the internet, and most Fridays at his apartment for turkey sandwiches. The subtext for our weekly rituals and the subsequent photographs changes from week to week, as our conversations fluctuate between the joys of aural creation and the apprehensions of a radically free and creative life.
